Project synthesis
The work of CCR and its MTS emphasises on themes, which are central to consolidating democracy, building peace and stability, and promoting respect for multi-cultural diversity. This second phase aims at supporting the work of CCR’s Mediation and Training Services on prevention, management and resolution of political and community conflicts in South Africa. This support is designed to indirectly contribute to the work of CCR in the southern African region.
Strategy / Objectives
The primary objective of MTS is to contribute to the management and resolution of significant political and community conflict in the Western Cape, and to the prevention and resolution of violent conflict in particular, through mediation, conflict resolution training and capacity-building activities. MTS will pursue this objective through the Mediation, the Learnership and the Partnership Programme.
Beneficiaries and outcomes
Mediation Programme: Government authorities, civic bodies, religious leaders and the police regularly call on MTS to undertake peacemaking. MTS staff and associates will engage per year in at least 2 long-term and 5 short-term mediations in significant political and community conflicts. Learnership-Programme: This structured twelve-month internship aims to empower 12 participants p.a. to conduct peacemaking with a high level of confidence and expertise. The graduates will engage in conflict prevention and resolution within or on behalf of the institutions for which they work. Partnership Programme: Institutions wracked by internal conflicts or with formal responsibility for addressing conflict in the public sphere will develop structures and procedures in preventing, managing and resolving conflicts. MTS will transfer conflict resolution skills to two partner organisations (government bodies) p.a. in this programme.
MTS provides additional capacity to CCR’s Africa Project through its Resource panel and internship programme, and it contributes to CCR’s expertise and understanding of peacemaking through its extensive engagement in mediation. Partner
